Why Do I Have Back Pain While Driving? Causes and Solutions
How Should You Sit in a Car to Avoid Back Pain?
Several factors contribute to back pain while driving, the first being posture. A poorly adjusted seat, slouching in the seat or leaning forward: many of us fail to adopt the right habits to prevent pain during car journeys.
One reason for poor posture is the design of car seats, which are tilted backwards and force the knees to sit higher than the pelvis. With this posture, the abdomen is compressed forward and the back rounds, which causes the intervertebral discs to be pinched at the front. This pressure can compress the nerves that run along the spine and prevent the discs from properly acting as shock absorbers—especially when dealing with road shocks and vibrations.
In addition, when sitting for long periods, pressure is applied along the spine down to the coccyx and sacrum. This can worsen existing conditions and increase pain.
Back Pain While Driving: The Impact of Shocks and Vibrations
You now know that poor posture increases the strain caused by road shocks (potholes and other irregularities) and vibrations. Even with proper posture that allows the discs to absorb part of the impact, shocks and vibrations remain a major constraint when driving.
These shocks and vibrations travel through the seat and into the body, causing muscle tension and a feeling of discomfort while driving. This discomfort often makes drivers change position frequently in an attempt to find relief, but repeated position changes can actually increase muscle tension.

How to Reduce Back Pain While Driving
To address the factors responsible for pain while driving, Ergotech has developed a full range of products designed to improve driving comfort and reduce back pain, buttock pain, and neck pain.
The first product we recommend to improve driving posture is a car seat cushion. Available in preventive and therapeutic versions, it helps raise the pelvis and correct the “knees higher than hips” posture described earlier. Raising the hips also opens the pelvic angle and naturally straightens the back into a more balanced and ergonomic position.
If a car seat cushion alone is not enough, we recommend complementing it with a back support cushion or lumbar support to provide additional protection for the back. Finally, we have developed a car headrest cushion to support the head, reduce neck tension, and help protect against whiplash.
All our products combine high-viscosity fluid and high-resilience foam to effectively absorb shocks and vibrations. Each product is available in several sizes and versions to adapt to different body types and needs—whether you suffer from a specific condition or simply want to improve your driving comfort.
